SULAIMANI — NRT presenter Amanj Babani was shot and killed along with his wife Lana Muhammad and son in Sulaimani on Wednesday evening (October 16).
His death was confirmed by staff at the Emergency Hospital in the city. Babani and his family were reportedly shot in their car at Sharazur Terminal.
Babani was the anchor of the Be Snur program.
Muhammad was also a journalist. She worked for Kurdsat.
“I will supervise the investigation of the case of the assassination of Amanj Babani,” said Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Deputy Prime Minister Qubad Talabani told NRT on Wednesday night.
“In addition to my condolences to his family and friends, I will, with the Sulaimani Asayish, personally monitor the case of the investigation of the assassination of Amanj Babani, his wife, and child.”
The Kurdistan Regional Government also released a statement condemning the murders.
“We call on the relevant agencies to conduct a serious investigation to find the criminals and punish them,” the statement said.
Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament Rewaz Fayaq tweeted that she had received the news of the murders “with great sadness.”
“Security institutions should find the perpetrators as soon as possible,” she added.
Deputy Speaker of the Kurdistan Parliament Hemin Hawrami condemned the murder in a tweet and called on the police and the security services in Sulaimani to “quickly investigate [and] bring the perpetrators to justice.”
